Learning Spaces

Facilities & Hiring
At Barton Primary School our purpose built facilities are designed specifically to promote student learning. In conjunction with this, the school was designed to act as a social infrastructure hub for the local community. The unique design of the school reflects the needs of the community and include features such as development of environments that support a range of learning styles, an embedded awareness of environmental sustainability, and internal environments are well ventilated and rich with natural light.
Through collaboration with consortium partners CERES and YMCA, local councils and other local organisations the facilities are used as a gathering place for local families and residents to enjoy community, arts, sports and recreation programs.
Our Facilities Include:
- an additional multi-purpose space that can be used by the school during school hours and by the YMCA out of school hours to provide a range of community services and programs;
- an expanded gymnasium built to Netball Victoria standards;
- embedded environmental sustainability education via the CERES ResourceSmart Schools program initiative;
- additional classrooms for students in this high growth area;

Library
Our school library is the focal point of information and literature in the school and plays a vital role in supporting the curriculum. Our Library aims to encourage and inspire our students to develop a love of reading and to engage in lifelong learning. Our library promotes a reading culture and a positive attitude to reading and encourages all students to participate in the Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge and Children’s Book Week. New material is constantly added and updated.
Students have access to our library through their weekyl or fortnightly library sessions. Students are encouraged to borrow 2 books at a time, for a 4-week loan period. Our school library offers a large collection of books and other resources. There are picture story books, non-fiction books and fiction books.
As our Library is always expanding with new books, we would love parent helpers to collect books from our office to contact for us. For further information regarding this, please email barton.ps@education.vic.gov.au. We appreciate your ongoing support with keeping our library consistently updated.
Barton Racing
Our Human Powered Vehicle (HPV) program is one of the most exciting and dynamic initiatives at Barton Primary, fostering teamwork, creativity, and hands-on learning in real-world contexts. Launched in 2023, this program kicked off with the acquisition of two racing trikes and a trailer from a local school. The enthusiastic response from our 20 Year 6 participants drove us to expand rapidly, and we’re now proud to have six HPV vehicles and two trailers in our growing fleet.
More Than Racing – A Year-Round Learning Journey
The HPV program is far more than just competing in races. It offers students opportunities to:
- Design, build, and optimise vehicles to meet detailed specifications.
- Train regularly, building endurance, strength, and strategy.
- Explore advanced technology, balancing speed, safety, and environmental responsibility.
- Collaborate across disciplines, with links to science, technology, engineering, maths (STEM), and physical education.
Students engage with the latest innovations in sustainable transport, reflecting on how technology shapes local and global communities. They also gain practical problem-solving skills by understanding the impact of materials and design on energy efficiency and performance.
Competing at Elite Events
Our teams race in multiple prestigious events throughout the year, including:
- HPV Grand Prix Series – a state-wide racing series that tests endurance and strategy.
- Maryborough Energy Breakthrough Challenge – a three-day flagship event in November that combines racing with innovation and engineering.
These competitions push students to excel both physically and mentally, with races demanding stamina, precision teamwork, and strategic thinking.
Building Character and Skills for Life
Beyond the track, the HPV program builds invaluable life skills. Participants learn:
- Teamwork and leadership – Students work in specialised roles, from drivers to designers and support crew.
- Perseverance and resilience – Training is rigorous, requiring commitment and dedication.
- Environmental awareness – The program integrates sustainability by encouraging students to think about energy-efficient design
- Community engagement – Students take pride in representing Barton Primary and showcasing their hard work to local communities.
Get Involved – Join the Journey
Our HPV program is a highlight for students and the broader Barton Primary community, creating memorable experiences, lifelong friendships, and valuable skills. Whether you’re a parent, local business, or potential sponsor, we invite you to get involved in supporting this incredible initiative.
